How to claim a lottery prize

Sign it, work out where to take it, and mind the deadline. The steps are the same everywhere. Two things are not.

The steps

  1. Sign the back of the ticket. A signed ticket is yours. An unsigned one can be claimed by whoever holds it.
  2. Check what it won. You can do that here, for free, before you go anywhere.
  3. Small prizes, any retailer. A store can pay you in cash up to a limit that varies by state.
  4. More than that, the lottery. Above the store's limit you claim at a lottery office or by mail, with ID and a claim form.
  5. A large prize, in person. The biggest prizes usually mean an appointment at lottery headquarters. Consider advice before you claim one.

Tax comes off the top, federal and often state. See what a prize leaves with the tax calculator.

The clock is the part people miss

You have a set window from the drawing date, and it is set by the state that sold the ticket, not the game. Most states give a year. Some give only 90 or 180 days. Miss it and the ticket is worth nothing, whatever it matched.

Questions people ask

How do I claim a lottery prize?
Sign the back of the ticket first. Small prizes you collect at any retailer. Above a limit that varies by state, you claim at a lottery office or by mail, with ID and a claim form.
How long do I have to claim a lottery prize?
It depends on the state that sold the ticket, not the game. Most give a year, some only 90 or 180 days, and California splits the jackpot from the rest. Miss the window and the ticket is worth nothing. Your state's deadline is in the table on this page.
Where do you claim a big lottery prize?
At a lottery office or by mail, not a store. A retailer can only pay up to a set cash limit, a few hundred dollars in some states and a few thousand in others. Above that you go to the lottery.
Do I have to claim in person?
Not always. Many states take a mailed claim for a mid-size prize. The largest prizes usually mean an appointment at lottery headquarters with ID.
Should I sign my lottery ticket?
Yes, straight away. A signed ticket is yours. An unsigned one can be claimed by whoever is holding it, so it is only as safe as the place you keep it.
