The Power Play column shows the maximum. The multiplier is drawn each time and is usually lower. It only counts if you paid for it when you bought the ticket. It never applies to the jackpot. The 10x multiplier is only in play when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
What changes these amounts
- A shared jackpot is divided
- Four winning tickets means a quarter each. The advertised figure is the pool, not your share.
- The jackpot is an annuity
- Paid over decades. Cash instead is often around half. More on that.
- California is different
- Every prize there is pari-mutuel by law, so this chart does not apply.
- Tax comes off first
- Federal withholding starts at 24% on larger prizes, plus state tax.
Questions about Powerball prizes
- How many numbers do you need to win a prize on Powerball?
- The smallest win is just the Powerball, paying $4. There are 9 ways to win. Without the Powerball, you need three numbers at $7.
- Does matching just the Powerball win anything?
- Yes. The Powerball on its own pays $4. A single white number on its own pays nothing.
- What is the Powerball jackpot actually worth?
- Less than the figure advertised. It is an annuity paid over decades, the cash option is often around half, and it is divided if more than one ticket wins. That is why we do not print a number next to a jackpot match.
- How do I check my Powerball numbers?
- Enter them on our Powerball checker, in any order. We show which of your numbers landed and what the match is worth.
- Does the Power Play apply to every prize?
- It multiplies fixed prizes only, never the jackpot.
- Are Powerball prizes the same in every state?
- No. California sets every prize after the drawing from ticket sales and the number of winners, so published figures do not apply there.
- Did anyone win the Powerball jackpot last night?
- We do not publish winner counts. We can tell you the numbers and whether yours matched. For whether a jackpot was claimed, the official lottery site is the authority.
